Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction. The immune system releases chemicals that can cause a patient to go into shock. Blood pressure drops and the airways narrow. Other signs include a weak and rapid pulse, nausea and vomiting, and skin rash.

Asthma

Asthma is a disease that affects the lungs. It is marked by repeated episodes of breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness, and nighttime or early morning cough.

Chronic cough

Many allergens such as pet dander, dust, mold, or pollen may cause a cough.

Contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is an itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an allergic reaction to it. Many substances such as fragrances, cosmetics, plants, and jewelry may lead to this type of reaction. The rash often shows up within days of an exposure to the allergen.

Drug allergies

A reaction of the immune system to a medication is known as a drug allergy. The most common signs and symptoms of drug allergy are rash, swelling, and difficulty breathing.

Eczema

Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by rash, itching, dryness and swelling, resulting in skin discoloration and skin infections.

Food allergies

The body’s immune system reacts to certain proteins in food during food allergies. The severity of reactions vary from mild symptoms like hives and lip swelling to symptoms that may be life-threatening such as anaphylaxis.

Insect venom allergies

In a very short amount of time those who are allergic to insect bites or stings may experience swelling around the sting or bite, dizziness, nausea, rash, breathing difficulties, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest.

Recurrent infections

Patients who suffer with allergies tend to get more infections when their allergies are not properly managed. Enlarged adenoids, sinusitis, nasal polyps or structural problems with the nose are causes of recurrent upper respiratory infections.

Rhinitis

Rhinitis is a common reaction to allergens. It is caused by inflammation and is associated with symptoms in the eyes, ears, or throat such as runny nose, itching, nasal congestion and sneezing.

Urticaria

Also referred to as hives, welts, weals, or nettle rash –hives is an itchy, raised rash that appears on the skin. It may appear on one part of the body or across large areas.

Dr. Mohammed specializes in both adult and pediatric Allergy and Immunology. She received her Honors Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology at the University of Toronto. She received her M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine and completed residency training in Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch. She completed a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).

Dr. Mohammed specializes in diagnosing and managing allergic conditions including food, drug and venom allergies, asthma, rhinitis, polyps, urticaria, eczema and contact dermatitis. She also specializes in primary and secondary Immunodeficiencies and eosinophilic disorders.
